Drug agents swarm home of Illinois family making maple syrup

February 9, 2015

According to a February 9 report by Fox Carolina News, an Illinois family got the shock of their lives last Wednesday morning when their property was raided by drug agents.

The Benson family, who lives in Union County, was turned in by neighbors for operating a suspected meth lab out of their home. Laura Benson, told Fox in an interview that she at first believed her son had gotten into trouble with the law

“I heard the dogs barking. And I knew that meant somebody was outside the house. And I looked out the windows and I seen a truck coming up the driveway fairly fast. And an Anna police car right behind it.”

After being told by one of the drug agents that a neighbor had turned them in for running a suspected meth lab, the family offered police a tour of their operation.

“They pointed to the buckets and I told them my husband has a hobby of making maple syrup. Of course they realized it once they seen it. But I was quite startled this morning.”

The Benson family has been making maple syrup for the past five years, and believe neighbors had seen the buckets on the property and mistaken them for a meth lab.

Agents were given a sample of the syrup to take home to their family, and the Benson family is praising their neighbors for being so alert to what appeared to be suspicious activity, telling police anyone who wished was welcome to a breakfast of pancakes.

Thankfully no dogs were shot during this encounter.
