Therapy dog killed by Ft. Lauderdale PD inside gated yard within feet of child

March 20, 2015

Earlier this month, a therapy dog was shot and killed by police in Florida. The family, as well as the community, are asking that the officer responsible be held accountable.

A petition has been set up here demanding answers into the death of Sylas, a Ft. Lauderdale therapy dog named Sylas, who was shot and killed on March 7, 2015 as police were looking for a suspect involved in an assault. Officers entered a gated yard after being asked not to because of the dogs and child, and shot at a family pet three to five times within feet of a child.
Sylas, a 4-year-old Dogo Argentino/pit mix, was well known and loved in the community. He often went to work with his owner, who is a vet tech. Sylas was a blood donor at the vet clinic and saved countless lives. Yet after he was shot, police allegedly denied him medical attention, refusing to allow his family anywhere near him.

According to owners Amanda Mercer and Tim Brown the family was denied the officers name and badge number; hindering their ability to formalize their own complaint and/or charges against the officer.

The petition, which has more than 1200 signatures, reads

“We the people demand that your office hold this officer accountable for the unnecessary murder of Sylas, and for putting this family, neighbors, and other officers in danger by firing his weapon in a small, enclosed area. We the people expect a thorough, impartial and independent investigation to be launched. We further expect that this officer will be disciplined and fired if he is found to be negligent”

Please show your support to the family, who did everything a pet owner should do. Their dog was inside a gated yard. The family warned police the dogs was there, and politely asked them not to enter. Police entered and shot this beautiful dog in close proximity to a young child, disregarding the safety of the child.

This is yet another case where a lawsuit should be filed, as this appears to be the only method to discourage the shooting of innocent family dogs by police officers who have no regard to anyone’s safety.

The family has set up a Facebook page in memory of Sylas.
