For those of you who have been following the miraculous survival of a sole cat who survived the January 3 Tea Tree Gully bushfires, there’s a sad update on the story of Merlin. According to a January 25 Facebook: Tea Tree Gully Veterinary Hospital post, Merlin has died from his injuries
“It is with heavy hearts that we share sad news from Merlin’s family. Merlin was a beautiful boy who was very lucky to have such a loving home.
Rest in peace brave little one.
Yesterday our family said goodbye to Merlin for the last time. While he was recovering well from most of his injuries, his heart was severely affected by the trauma of his experience and recurring fluid in his chest meant that he was struggling to breathe. He fought so hard to stay with us but couldn’t win this battle. Our family are deeply grateful for the treatment and care he received at Tea Tree Gully Veterinary Hospital.”
No one knows how Merlin escaped the fire that took the lives of dozens of dogs and cats at Tea Tree Gully Boarding and Kennels. Merlin was found wandering five days later, injured and dehydrated. Since that time he’s been under the care of the veterinary staff.
Although we were all hoping for a miracle, Merlin’s heart and lungs simply couldn’t overcome the injuries he received. His vet had warned everyone it would be a tough fight for the little kitty, and it would take him months to recover if he recovered at all.
Surrounded by his family, and the dedicated staff who gave their all to pull him through, Merlin crossed the bridge. Rest in peace, dear one. For a short while, you made us believe in miracles.
