A mother dog in Georgia has only recently left the side of her dead puppy, Fox19 News reported January 7.
The grieving mother, a Golden Retriever, had been at the Laurel Grove North cemetery in Savannah for at least two days. Refusing to leave her dead puppy’s side, photographer Hunter Cone was touched by her devotion as he was there photographing the tombstones and wanted to make her grieving time more comfortable.
Hunter spoke of the love between mother and pup to news media, with a video available here
“It made me feel really depressed and upset,” Cone said. “That’s something I didn’t want to see, but I’m kind of glad I did. I mean, the dog braced through the cold, starvation and thirst to stay with its dead puppy. If this doesn’t prove that dogs have feelings just like humans do, I don’t think anything else will”
Hunter and his mom brought the dog food and water and described the grieving mother as weak and timid, but with all of her motherly instinct still intact.
With the dangerous cold blast to hit the southeast Wednesday night, a rescue was attempted. A puppy similar in appearance to her precious baby calmed down this devoted mother, but still, she refused to leave the cemetery to go to a warm place where she could be cared for.
After a rescue attempt lasting more than six hours failed, the dog was left alone to continue her vigil. It’s reported the mother has now buried her puppy in the cemetery and ran away.
