Escaped transient leads to K-9 being shot by officer and family dog killed

An escaped transient wanted by the law ended with a K-9 officer shot and a family dog dead after being shot by police. reported the story.

Shawn Redding, a known wanted transient, was found near the lake Elsinore area of Walls Street and Brightman Avenue in Lakeland Village around 10 p.m. Friday night.

While waiting for backup, a deputy attempted to place Redding in the back of his squad car. Redding was able to escape the deputy, sending the officer on a chase into an open field.

In a police report filed by Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Albert Martinez, K-9 officer Tessa, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who has been with the department since 2010, assisted with the search for Redding.

Both Officer Martinez and Tessa ended up in a residential yard and were searching the premises when a large pit bull jumped out an open window and attacked Tessa.

Another deputy fired at the pit bull, which fatally injured the attacking dog. One of the rounds hit Tessa in the right paw. Tessa was treated at a local veterinarian clinic, where she spent Saturday night. She’s expected to return to duty as soon as her paw heals, and is recovering at home with her handler.

Deputies received information June 14 at around 9:20 a.m. Tipping them off that Redding was possibly at a local business in the 17400 block of Grand Avenue. Deputies responded, and Redding was arrested without incident. He was booked for his active warrants, as well as for resisting arrest at Southwest Detention Center.

For those readers not aware of Riverside, this is the same department where one officer shot another in the leg back in April 2014 while trying to shoot a dog.
