An upstate South Carolina bomb sniffing dog is dead after an equipment malfunction Tuesday afternoon. Fox Carolina News reported the story September 17.
Emma, a black lab, is a familiar sight at Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. Emma, who has been working at GSP for 2-and-a-half years has and died after being left inside the K9 vehicle with the air conditioning going. Unfortunately, the unit malfunctioned and the car overheated.
While this has been described as a tragic accident, Weston said in an interview that Emma’s death will be investigated. Ways to prevent this from happening in the future will also be addressed.
A lot of people are criticizing the actions by Emma’s handler to leave the dog in the vehicle for such a long time. West confirmed this isn’t uncommon, and K9 dogs are left unattended for periods of time inside an air conditioned vehicle. Weston said the handler followed protocol and won’t face disciplinary action.
Should the handler be held responsible for her death? Please leave a comment.
