An Aiken man is alive today, thanks to his terminally ill cocker spaniel Ace. About a month ago, Ace was given a death sentence by his vet. He only has weeks to live, thanks to a growing tumor wrapped around his teeth. Augusta Chronicle reported the story.
Matt escaped the house with little Spades, but as he went to grab a hose to fight the fire, he noticed Ace wasn’t behind him. Matt was able to go back into the house and rescue his hero, who was hiding in his favorite sleeping spot under the coffee table.
Matt told The Aiken Standard “He was scared. You could tell. He was shaking. I grabbed him, ran through the kitchen and out the back door” No one was injured in the fire. Matt lost most of his possessions and suffered from smoke inhalation.
He considers this a small price to pay for the lives of his precious dogs. Matt told reporters he’d have gone from room to room searching for his dog, had he not found Ace under the table.
Ace, who’s been with Matt for more than nine years, isn’t a good candidate for surgery. The vet believes any treatment for the tumor would do more harm than good. Ace is currently on antibiotics and eats soft food. He still has a good appetite, despite his grim prognosis.
It was a love story on how Ace and Matt met for the first time. Matt had attended a get-together at a friend’s house, where he met Ace tucked away in the bathroom. Matt spent several hours playing with the friendly cocker spaniel puppy, who reminded him of a puppy he had as a boy.
When he learned his friend was moving, Matt offered to buy the dog. His friend told Matt the dog wasn’t for sale, but eventually relented. Ace and Matt have been together ever since. They’re very protective of each other.
The comment made by Viola as to searching a burning house to find his dog has endeared Matt to dog lovers everywhere. A lot of us say we’d go back into a burning building to save a fur-kid. Thankfully, most of us will never be faced with that decision.
