Memorial service for Shiner Bock, killed by Austin Police, set for April 23

April 21, 2014

A memorial service, hosted by the Silverman Law Group, will be held Wednesday for Shiner Bock, a German Shepherd shot by a member of the Austin Police Department on April 24, 2013. A video describing Shiner’s death can be viewed by clicking here.

Friends of Shiner will be holding the yappy hour memorial service in honor of Shiner between 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Gibson Bar on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin.

There will be a cash bar, and dog rights activists are invited to attend to celebrate Shiner’s memory. You can sign up for the event on their Facebook page.

Shiner was shot last spring as he accompanied his dad, Julian Reyes, as Julian was doing some work at his storage building. Police had been called to what they believed was a burglary in progress in the area.

Julian had permission from the storage facility owner to be on the property to work on his art projects. After the shooting, Julian was handcuffed by Austin Police and wasn’t allowed to stay by Shiner as he lay dying.

A YouCaring webpage fundraiser has been set up here, where those in support of Shiner are seeking 1,000 caring people to make a donation in Shiner’s memory. These donations will go towards covering legal expenses for Shiner’s case.

During South-by-South West, a benefit was held in honor of Shiner’s memory, spreading awareness about the puppycide issue and reminding others that there is still work to be done.

The Austin Statesman reported 21 dogs were killed in 2013 by Austin Police Department. The most recent shooting occurred Friday night.

You can keep up with Shiner on his Facebook page. Please share this article, and attend if you can, as a show of support for all dogs who have been killed by police.
