According to the Columbia Police Department, 8-year-old German Rottweiler Harlem was used as a therapy dog to keep his owner calm and to help ease his depression. A Facebook post by the Columbia Police Department stated the owner’s female friend was walking Harlem near the Falling Springs Apartment complex on Falling Springs Road.
The dog was shot after two unknown males tried to steal the victim’s cell phone. Instead of taking the phone, one of the two suspects shot Harlem instead. Harlem was rushed to a local veterinarian for treatment but died of his injuries. Harlem’s devastated owner told CPD
“I haven’t gotten to cry yet. I am so upset. I cannot explain how much I love him. That was my baby. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
One of the suspects is described as a black male who was last seen wearing a black hoodie and a black ski mask. The other suspect is a slim blck male in his 20’s who was wearing a sky blue windbreaker jacket. Their vehicle is described as an older blue pickup truck with a chrome toolbox in the truck bed.
Harlem’s owner is not only emotionally devasted, he also has to determine how he can adopt another service dog. Harlem was worth an estimated $3,000.
