I’ve been accused on more than one occasion of making pet owners paranoid about turning their animals loose in the safety of their own neighborhoods. I fully admit to this, as no place seems safe for our four-legged friends. Abusers are around every corner. Unfortunately, many of us live with them.
I was surprised to find my editor (and owner) of pictures-of-cats.org had mentioned my domestic violence articles in one of his blogs and gave a chart showing the percentage of animal abusers who went on to abuse people. If you’ve ever watched someone you’re in a relationship with abuse an animal, whether it’s YOUR animal or not, DO NOT fool yourself into believing your pet or yourself won’t be next.
Abusers are more predictable than you’d think and almost always graduate from one helpless life form to another. Abusers get their kicks by being in control and most of the time they’ll hurt whoever or whatever is close to them whenever they decide to throw a temper tantrum.
I hope the readers at examiner.com will read all of my articles and educate themselves on the personality of an abuser and ways to protect yourself as well as your pets. It’s not always what you’ve been taught. You could be living right next door to an abuser. Worst case scenario, you could be LIVING with one.
