A Wisconsin dog is recovering after being shot by police over the weekend after the dog became protective of its unconscious owner, Marshfield News Herald reported September 20.

The incident occurred in Marshfield when a Wood County Sheriff’s deputy was responding to a call of a woman passed out on the sidewalk in the 500 block of South Cedar Avenue around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to a news release issued by the Marshfield Police Department on Saturday, a pit bull belonging to the unconscious woman attacked the officers, causing one of the deputies to fire one round at the dog.

The dog survived and is being treated at a local veterinary hospital. It’s listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

No officers were injured, but the 29-year-old woman was arrested on a valid warrant.

Police say they will follow up on adequate safety measures to control her dog.
