A Sumter, South Carolina teacher has been charged with crimes typical of a sexual predator, Fox Carolina reported February 20.
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Elizabeth Moss, 31, Wednesday evening after she turned herself in around 6:30 p.m.
Moss is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student between March and April last year. Moss, who is married to another school district employee, is the mother of three children, ages 3,5, and 12.
Her husband stated he doesn’t believe any of the students have been sexually assaulted, but investigators haven’t ruled out that possibility.
Deputies have removed several items from her home, which they feel are necessary to their investigation. Senior Investigator Darlene Dellinger said she has four interviews with possible witnesses or victims. Since news of Moss’ behavior broke on Monday, many calls have come into the sheriff’s department. In an interview with Fox Carolina, Dellinger stated
“The students have been very forthcoming. They realize the seriousness of the crime.”
Moss is said to have used typical predator behavior known as grooming.
*being overly concerned over student
*predator takes on a childlike demeanor
*earning trust using social media such as Facebook or Twitter
Dellinger also stated Facebook has been legally served, and have been cooperative, as has the Sumter School District.
Moss, who has been with the Sumter School District since January 6, 2013, was placed on administrative leave on February 11, pending results of the investigation.
Attorney Rose Mary Parham, who is representing Moss, released the following to news media
“These allegations arose after Beth disciplined some of her students at school. She is innocent of all charges and looks forward to her day in court.”
Moss is being held at the Sumter-Lee Detention Center, where she is waiting for her bond hearing. If you feel your child may have been either a witness or a victim, you are asked to call the Sunter County Sheriff’s Office at 803-436-2000.
