A South Carolina man is in jail, charged with the death of his child after the child died in a hot car. Fox Carolina News reported the story May 9.
David Richard Gray III, 30, of Darlington County, is charged with unlawful neglect of a child resulting in death. The Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee confirmed the identity of Sophia Goyeneche, age 13 months, who died of hyperthermia. Hardee determined her death occurred after she was left alone in a hot car for several hours.
Sophia died May 8, and Gray has been identified as the girl’s father. Gray had left the child outside a Hartsville business where he worked, and the child died from the extreme heat. Gray was taken to the Darlington County Detention Center.
Hardee has asked the SLED child death division, as well as the Hartsville City Police Department to assist in the investigation.
This is the time of year where heat can quickly build inside a vehicle. Don’t leave your children or your pets alone in a vehicle.
