An upstate child played a role in getting help for her mom, who was being abused. Fox Carolina reported the story February 25.
The police report said the woman had injuries to her face, as well as being punched, smacked, held down and grabbed by her neck.
Stephens turned on the children, ages 5 and 6 when they begged him to stop beating their mom. When Stephens turned toward the children, the victim was able to get away and run to her van.
Stephens ran outside, where he threatened to use a brick to smash the windshield. At this time, Stephens mother ran outside and at some point fell in the yard. When he went to help his mother, the victim was able to run for help.
At this point, the victim and the police met up.
Now for the heroic children this young mother has. When asked who placed the 911 call, the victim’s 5-year-old little boy admitted he dialed 911 and told dispatch to send police to “come get his daddy.” The 6-year-old daughter told police her dad grabbed her mom’s cell phone as she was holding it.
Stephens has been arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence third offense, petit larceny for taking the phone, and two counts of cruelty to children.
It’s a sad situation when the children behave more responsibly than the adults in a relationship. With this being the third offense, hopefully, the victim will learn it’s time to stay away from this man.
South Carolina ranks #1 in criminal domestic violence deaths. This time the victim was lucky to survive without any major injuries. Next time she may not be so fortunate.
